OBJECTIVE SUMMARY: The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for identifying patient needs and priorities for care through assessment, planning for and delegating care based on patient needs, executing therapeutic physician or nurse-initiated interventions, and evaluating the patient's response to care and progress towards outcomes. Whenever possible, the family or those significant to the family are considered as part of the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation efforts of the RN. When care is not provided directly by the RN, the RN assigns/delegates care to other qualified members of the health care team. The RN coordinates care between other professional disciplines as needed. Through documentation and verbal communication, essential information is shared with health care team members. Unit-based activities which contribute to a positive work and professional environment are performed.
Accurately triages patients using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI).
Initiates and documents accurate and ongoing assessment and re-assessment of physical, psychological, and social problems of patients within the emergency care setting.
Collects key information from patient, family, laboratory, and other medical reports.
Analyzes assessment data to identify patient problems.
Performs therapeutic nursing interventions consistent with nursing division policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management and infection control practices.
Follows BLS, ACLS, and TNCC protocols.
Is knowledgeable in arrhythmia detection and treatment.
Initiates pain management measures according to policies, protocols, and physician orders.
Is knowledgeable in crisis intervention.
Identifies expected outcomes individualized to the emergency patient based on the patient’s assessment, identified problems, and cultural diversity.
Formulates and implements a plan of care for the emergency patient based on assessment, patient problems, and expected outcomes.
Evaluates and modifies the plan of care based on observable patient responses and attainment of expected outcomes.
Adheres to established standards of emergency nursing practice, including behaviors that characterize professional status.
Provides care based on philosophical and ethical concepts. These concepts include reverence for life; respect for the inherent dignity, worth, autonomy, and individuality of each human being; and acknowledging the beliefs of other people.
Ensures open and timely communication with emergency patients, significant others, and other health care providers through professional collaboration.
Collaborates with other health care providers to deliver patient-centered care in a manner consistent with safe, efficient, and cost-effective use of resources.
Demonstrates ability to manage the care of patients with conditions common to the unit, including:
Management of the patient with a STEMI, Stroke, or Trauma
Management of the patient with respiratory emergencies
Management of the patient with cardiovascular emergencies, including shock and sepsis
Management of the patient with neurological emergencies
Management of the patient with gastrointestinal emergencies
Management of the patient with renal and genitourinary emergencies
Management of the patient with endocrine emergencies
Management of the patient with ENT emergencies
Management of the patient with ocular emergencies
Management of the patient with wound and orthopedic emergencies
Management of the patient with communicable diseases
Management of the patient with obstetric emergencies
Management of pediatric emergencies
Management of abuse and neglect, including intimate partner violence
Management of behavioral health emergencies and substance abuse
Serves as a role model and mentor to students in the health professions.
Serves as preceptor at the discretion of the manager.
Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family.
Interacts with patients/families with a variety of developmental and sociocultural backgrounds.
Provides information to patients and families which reduces anxiety and conveys an attitude of acceptance, sensitivity, and caring.
Maintains professional relationships and conveys relevant information to other members of the health care team.
Initiates communication with peers about clinical priorities for care.
Relays information appropriately over telephone, pagers, and other communication devices.
Promotes effective teamwork.
Accepts a patient care assignment based on patient census, acuity, needs, and the qualifications and competencies of self and of other staff members.
Delegates work to other staff members as needed.
Initiates problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with peers.
Attends at least 75% of staff meetings and all mandatory in-service.
Contributes to the annual review of unit-based practices, protocols, and policies.
Assists in the development of indicators, benchmarks, and data collection as assigned.
Responds to problems/opportunities to improve care.
Supports and is involved in the hospital's Quality Improvement initiatives.
Participates in and maintains competencies required for the position.
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Washington
Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing
At least one year of emergency department or critical care experience
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:
BLS Certification required.
ACLS certification required.
PALS Certification required.
TNCC Certification required.
CEN Certification preferred.
* An ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain clinical competency as required for the unit of assignment. * Annual skill competency verification. * Excellent verbal and written skills. * An ability and willingness to work with patients growth and development needs, particularly related to patients who are: all ages, experiencing healthcare crisis, or dying. * An ability to manage a sometimes chaotic work environment related to changing patient needs, including work with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes, and those who are dying. * A positive attitude towards health care team members and diverse patient populations.
