Position Summary
The Resource Coordinator is a support to all departments with special expertise to perform direct patient care with surge of patients in the SVH ED or with patient care on Med-Surg. This staff member will supervise the departments of the hospital as a whole in the absence of manager staff that are gone for the day and off on the weekend.
The Resource Coordinator must possess the ability to make independent decisions that are evidence based or have a policy or procedure to support it. This RN must know regulatory guidelines that pertain to nursing care. This RN would be familiar with some aspects of Utilization and Swing Bed referral as it pertains to admission to both Med-Surg and Swing Bed.
The Resource Coordinator must have tact in verbal communication, be flexible to cover breaks in any nursing department for a variety of staff levels, have a cheerful disposition and be the best at team dynamics. The Resource Coordinator reports to the Director of Nursing.

Roles and Tasks

  • Is a patient care resource to the team functions of the Nursing Departments on his/her shift, in accordance with established policies and procedures that are well understood by staff in this role.
  • Makes routine rounds on individual departments, to staff for a patient care need or coordinate the staff needed. This would be in collaboration with that department staff or, in the case of Med-Surg, with the Charge Nurse.
  • Maintains a presence on the nursing units and an awareness of patient care concerns with communication from primary nursing and the charge nurse.
  • Maintains a leadership, supervisory role in the absence of the department managers.
  • Makes certain that sufficient facility staff levels are met to ensure delivery of quality patient care in all departments. Responds to immediate requests for staffing from hospital nursing departments by being the float RN.
  • Provides for adequate breaks of all staff and ensures mandatory documentation is up to date.
  • Keeps the ED, Executives and referral coordinator appraised of Bed Availability per the policy Census Management.
  • Triage and care of patients in the Emergency Department (ED) during surge times of day or night
  • Responds to all Code and Rapid Response Calls, may be the team leader in these events until the arrival of a provider.
  • Coordinate after hours and weekend admissions to Med-Surg and Swing Bed in the absence of the swing bed referral coordinator.
  • Assesses appropriateness of patients for admission and transfer. Is involved in every patient admission for the purpose of thorough Medication Reconciliation.
  • Assists with other audit and reporting duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager of Med-Surg and Director
  • Performs as the Incident Commander with any Fire, Life, and Safety issue until an administrator is on site.
  • Communicates with ancillary and support departments on patient conditions, needs, and concerns.


  • Is the Infection Prevention monitor in the absence of the IP nurse. Hand Hygiene Report weekly
  • Administers or delegates the staff to perform outpatient wound and infusion care during weekend appointments
  • Responds to concerns, issues, complaints, and grievances quickly and appropriately, in the absence of the Administrator and DON.
  • Does immediate code debriefs with documentation to support this. Ensures that all code restock is complete.
  • Administers the supervisory report and assessment of any staff injury while at work and submits this to the manager
  • Does in time safety zone follow up collecting facts and debrief. Places this in the follow up comment section of the safety zone for the nurse managers.
  • Is a resource for nursing practice questions or concerns
  • Reports any needed information to the Managers and Directors of the respective departments.
  • Other Tasks as assigned by the Med-Surg Manager
  • Time Trak on Sundays for M/S or ED
  • Projects to work on when patient care needs are met may be audits delegated by the M/S Manager

Additional NOTES
Many of the duties of this position are assumed by the Director of Nursing, Med-Surg Nurse Manager, ED Nurse Manager, Outpatient Infusion and Wound Manager and Referral Coordinator/Infection Prevention during the weekdays 0700-1700.


  • A Registered Nurse with at least 4 years of experience.
  • Suicide Prevention Training completed.
  • Emergency Department experience necessary
  • A Registered Nurse cross trained to the Emergency Department with orientation to triage and routine care.
