OBJECTIVE SUMMARY: Exercises general supervision over laboratory staff. Coordinates a variety of administrative, fiscal, and technical activities to ensure the efficient operation of the clinical laboratory in the performance of tests for the diagnoses and treatment of disease.


  • Manages laboratory services in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards. Establishes and implements departmental policies and procedures consistent with hospital objectives and policies
  • Develops and monitor departmental budget. Reviews rates, analyzes equipment costs.
  • Selects, trains, and orients departmental personnel. Assigns work, evaluates performance and recommends personnel actions such as promotions, reclassification, and disciplinary actions.
  • Collects data, prepares reports, answers correspondence and compiles statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes
  • Addresses complaints about laboratory equipment and supplies utilizing effective cost control measures
  • Attends and participates in administrative and other meetings as required. Participates on committees as required/requested
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, conferences, professional affiliations and independent reading
  • Maintains all records, reports, statistics, logs, files, etc. as required

REQUIRED EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science in Medical Terminology

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years as medical terminologist with at least two (2) years supervisory/management responsibility

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS: ASCP certified Medical Technologist or NCA certified

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Exposure to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens and toxic substances

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent standing and walking for extended periods of time. Listing and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs. Visual acuity and normal color perception.
